Ogaden–Djibouti Railway Project

A strategic link to unlock Ogaden’s natural wealth and strengthen Ethiopia’s maritime access

Infrastructure to Support Development

The new railway will serve as the essential transport corridor between this inland basin and international markets. It will ensure the efficient, safe, and continuous flow of energy, mineral commodities, agriculture, and livestock. This railway offers a vital alternative to road and pipeline transport, significantly enhancing the logistics capacity of the entire region

The Ogaden Basin: A Key Energy Hub

The Ogaden Basin in eastern Ethiopia is increasingly recognized as a pivotal geological frontier. Building on existing data and the active involvement of several international energy companies already present in the region, a new and ambitious exploration campaign is set to dramatically reshape East Africa’s energy landscape.

Geological surveys have already confirmed substantial natural gas reserves, including 5 trillion cubic meters (BCM), with an additional 190.7 BCM (6.8 TCF) already allocated. Furthermore, an estimated 46 million tonnes of crude oil have been discovered to date. These figures, notably certified by Netherland, Sewell & Associates, Inc. (NSAI), a global authority in petroleum analysis.

However, industry experts and government officials anticipate these numbers are just the beginning. Projections suggest that an intensified exploration drive will lead to a substantial increase in new hydrocarbon discoveries, with natural gas finds expected to significantly exceed the current multi-trillion cubic meter estimates. This anticipated surge in confirmed reserves, coupled with future exploration successes, will undeniably cement the Ogaden Basin’s position as one of East Africa’s most critical emerging energy hubs.

Potash Reserves in Ethiopia

Ethiopia also boasts significant potash deposits, with the most substantial ones found in the Danakil Depression. These reserves are estimated to be among the largest undeveloped potash deposits in the world.

Government Support for Regional Growth

The Ethiopian government’s proactive approach to infrastructure development and policy reforms signals a clear dedication to unlocking the full potential of its rich mineral resources and fostering robust regional growth.

In Summary

The Ogaden–Djibouti Railway is not merely a transport project — it is a nation-shaping endeavor. By connecting energy-rich inland Ethiopia to global trade routes, it will strengthen the region’s economic fabric, secure its position in international markets, and deliver long-term benefits for generations to come.
